Notes: Oilette Series, Picturesque Coaching Inns. From back:
The George, Crawley. The swinging sign is a familiar object to every traveller on the Brighton Road. The house boasts a considerable antiquity, and in the days when London to Brighton was one of the most popular coaching roads of the south of England, the stream of vehicles calling at or passing this inn must have been considerable. The neighbouring Crawley Downs was a popular rendezvous with price-fighters; consequently the "George" and other Inns at Crawley have witnessed the visit of many patrons of "the noble art.".
