Will of Joseph Akehurst of West Firle

Date signed: 22 Nov 1809, Probate date: 03 Feb 1810

This is the last will and testament of me Joseph Akehurst of Westfirle in the county of Sussex yeoman. First I give unto my wife Elizabeth Akehurst all and every my assuages, lands, tenements, hereditaments and real estate both freehold and copyhold, to hold the same to her my said wife and her assigns for her natural life. And after her decease I give my freehold house with the appurtenances in the Cliff near Lewes in the said county unto Robert Ellman of Brightelmston in the said county and his heirs, charged with the payment of eighty pounds sterling apiece to his brother Thomas Ellman and his sister Mary Vernall (?) or their respective executors or administrators within six months next after the death of my said wife. Also I give (after the decease of my said wife) my copyhold, assuage and garden with the appurtenances situate in Alfriston in the said county unto Richard Ford Akehurst of Beddingham in the said county and his heirs absolutely and I direct my executors to stand possessed of my personal estate in trust to permit my said wife to receive the interest and unusual produce thereof for her natural life and after her decease in trust to pay to Mary the wife of John Fuller of Westfirle aforesaid carrier order executors or administrators one hundred pounds sterling and upon further trust to pay all the residue of my personal estate unto my sister Frances the wife of William Stevens of Westfirle aforesaid yeoman and her executors and administrators and I appoint the said Robert Ellman and John Stevens of Westfirle aforesaid yeoman joint executors in trust of this my will In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty second day of Novemenber one thousand eight hundred and nine.

Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Joseph Akehurst the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.

3rd February 1810 then was sworn Robert Ellman and John Stevens the joint executors in this will named to whom was committed the burthen of the execution thereof sworn also that the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased do not amount in value unto one thousand pounds.
