This is the last Will and Testament of me Thomas Siffleet of Newick in the County of Sussex Gentleman touching the Disposition of such temporal Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God of his Goodness to bestow upon me

First I give and devise unto my nephew Thomas Siffleet of Newick aforesaid yeoman All that my copyhold Messuage or Tenement with the Barn ….. Outbuildings Farm Lands and Appurtenances thereto belonging called Wild ffields situate in the parish of Chailey in the said County and now in the Occupation of my said nephew Thomas Siffleet holden of the Manor of Balneth and which I have duly surrendered to the Use of my Will To hold the same to him my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet his Heirs and Assigns for ever But charged and chargeable nevertheless to and with the Payment of the Legacy or Sum of fifty Pounds apiece of lawful Money of Great Britain Which I do hereby give devise and bequeath thereout unto my Kinswoman Sarah (the Wife of Hollingdale late Sarah Broomfield and Daughter of my Cousin John Broomfield deceased) and unto my Niece Jane (the Wife of Heath late Jane Soper and Daughter of my Brother in Law Thomas Soper deceased / The said Legacy of Sum of fifty pounds each to be paid to them the said Sarah Hollingsdale and Jane Soper respectively within twelve months next after my Decease To their several and respective Use and Uses

Also I give and devise unto my Kinsman Thomas Siffleet / Son of my aforesaid Nephew Thomas Siffleet / All those my four several pieces or Parcels of Land (Parcel of certain lands called Trick(?) ) containing by Estimation twelve Acres be the same more or less (poor photocopy quality obscures text) in the parish of Chailey aforesaid holden of the Manor of Housedean(?) and which I have also surrendered to the use of my Will To hold the same to him my said Kinsman Thomas Siffleet the son his Heirs and Assigns for ever Also I give and devise unto my aforesaid Nephew Thomas Siffleet and his Assigns for and during the Term of fifteen years if he shall so long live All that my Freehold Messuage or Tenement with the Buildings Farm Lands and Appurtenances thereto belonging commonly called or known by the Name of Old Lands otherwise Tilehouse containing by Estimation twenty two Acres be the same more or less situate lying and being in the Parish of Newick aforesaid and now in the Occupation of John Sturt And from and immediately after the End or Expiration of the said Term of fifteen Years or the Decease of him my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet which shall first happen Then I give and devise the said freehold Messuage or Tenement Buildings ffarm Lands and premises called Old Lands otherwise Tilehouse unto my Kinsman Stephen Siffleet (another son of my said nephew Thomas Siffleet) and to his Heirs and Assigns for ever (Subject to the Right of a Road or Way with or without Horses Oxen Teams Wains Carts and Carriages for my Kinsman Josiah Siffleet his Heirs and Assigns in Respect of the Copyhold premises holden of the Manor of Allington my me hereinafter given and devised to him in Remainder or Expectancy to pass and repass unto from and out of the said Copyhold premises over and thro ‘ the aforesaid Lands and premisescalled old Lands otherwise Tilehouse unto and from a certain place near thereto called Rowhead He the said Josiah Siffleet his heirs and assigns from Time to ~ Time keeping such Road in Repair

Also I give and devise unto John Ellis of Chailey aforesaid Labourer All that my Copyhold Messuage or Cottage with the Garden Orchard and Appurtenances thereto belonging situate lying and being in Chailey aforesaid and now in the Tenure or Occupation of John Olodon (?) his Assigns or Undertenants holden of the said anor of Balneth and which I have duly surrendered to the Use of my Will To hold the same to him the said John Ellis his Heirs and Assigns for ever

Also I give devise and bequeath unto my Niece ~ Jemima Siffleet (Daughter of my late Brother James Siffleet) and his Assigns for and during the Term of her natural Life One Annuity or clear yearly Rent Charge or sum of four Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain The same to be paid and payable to her from and out of the Hereditaments and premises by me ….. next hereinafter devised by two equal half yearly Payments on the two most …. Usual Fesasts or Days of Payment in the Year (that is to say) on the ffeast Day of the Annunciation of the blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the ….. Archangel The first payment thereof to begin and be made on such of the said … ffeasts as shall next happen after my Decease and so continue to be paid during the Life of the said Jemima Siffleet by the person or Persons for the Time being who shall be intitled to the Rents and profits ffreehold and Inheritance of the ~ same Hereditaments and Premises And charged and chargeable to and with the payment of the aforesaid Annuity or yearly Rent Charge I give and devise unto my said nephew Thomas Siffleet and his Assigns for and during the Term of fifteen years if he shall so long live All those my six pieces or Parcels of Copyhold Pasture and Woodland containing by Estimation thirty Acres more or less with the Appurtenances lying together in the parish of Newick aforesaid … ~ heretofore Mells(?) and before Kidds (?) and holden of the Manor of Allington by the … yearly Rent or Sum of two shillings and eight Pence And also all that one Mesuage Barn Stable Garden Orchard and certain Customary Lands thereto …belonging called Ketches containing by Estimation one hundred and fifty Acres more or less with the Appurtenances situate lying and being in Newick aforesaid near the Church Yard there holden of the said Manor of Allington and which I have duly surrendered to the Use of my Will ) And also all those my three pieces or Parcels of ffreehold Land called by the several Names of Shanovers – Hop Garden Newffield pond and the three cornered Meadow and containing together by Admeasurement eight Acres three Roods and four perches (Except a piece or Parcel of Land by the Name of the poor ffield hereinafter given and devised to John Gosling and his Heirs And a certain piece or parcel of Woodland containing by Estimation twenty Acres more or less being the northern part of certain Woodlands called the Rough and divided from the other part thereof by a Hedge and old Ditch running in a Line from East to West hereinafter given and devised to my nephew Michael Siffleet and his Assigns for Life with Remainder to his two Daughters in Fee And from and after the End or Expiration of the said Term of fifteen Years or the Decease of him my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet which shall first happen

Then I give and devise unto my aforesaid Kinsman ~ Josiah Siffleet (another Son of my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet) All the aforesaid Messuage Buildings Lands Hereditaments and premises last above devised (except and subject as aforesaid) Together with the Liberty of a Road or Way to from and out of the said Hereditaments and premises holden of the Manor of Allington thro and over the Lands and premises by me hereinbefore devised called Old Lands otherwise Tilehouse unto and from Rowhead and ….. repairing such Road or Way in Manner as before mentioned) To hold the same ~ unto my said Kinsman Josiah Siffleet his Heirs and Assigns for ever Charged and Chargeable nevertheless to and with the payment of one Annuity or clear yearly Rent Charge or Sum of ten Pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain which I give devise and bequeath thereout unto my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet during the Term of his natural Life in Case he shall survive the aforesaid Term of fifteen Years The same to be paid to him by my said ~ Kinsman Josiah Siffleet his Heirs and Assigns by two equal half yearly payments on the two most usual Feasts or Days of Payment in the Year ( that is to say) on the Fesasts of the Annunciation of the Blesed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel the first payment therof to begin and be made on such of the said Feasts as shall next happen after the Expiration of the aforesaid Term of fifteen Years And also further charges and chargeable to and with the Payment of and other ….. ~ annuity or Yearly Rent Charge or Sum of ffive of like lawful money as …aforesaid which I do hereby give devise and bequeath thereout unto Ann … Siffleet the Wife of my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet / and her Assigns Provided She shall survive and outlive her Husband The same to be paid to her by my said Kinsman Josiah Siffleet his Heirs and Assigns by two equal half yearly payments on the several ffeast Days aforesaid and the first Payment thereof to ~ begin and be made on such of the said Feast Days as shall first and next … happen after the Decease of my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet And likewise further charged and chargeable to and with the Payment of the several Legacies or Sums of two hundred Pounds apiece of like lawful Money as aforesaid Which I do hereby give and bequeath thereout unto my three Kinsmen James Siffleet William Siffleet and Michael Siffleet (Sons of my … aforesaid Nephew thomas Siffleet) The same to be paid to them respectively by my said Kinsman Josiah Siffleet his Heirs or Assigns within twelve Months ~ next after he or they shall have come into possession of the said Hereditaments and premises if they at that time shall be of the respective Ages of twenty one Years or otherwise when and as they shall respectively attain that Age To their several and respective use and Uses But in Case the said James Siffleet William Siffleet and Michael Siffleet or any or either of them shall happen to die before his or their said Legacy of Legacies shall become due and payable Then my Will is and I do hereby order and direct that the Legacy or Legacies of him or them so dying shall lapse and become void

Also I give devise and bequeath … unto my Housekeeper Ann Picknall Widow and her Assigns for and during the Term of her natural Life One Annuity or clear yearly Rent Charge or Sum of six Pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain the same to be paid and payable to her from and out of the Hereditaments by me next hereinafter devised by two equal half yearly ~ pauments on the several ffeasts aforesaid The first payment thereof to begin and be made on such of the said ffeasts or Days of payment as shall first and next happen after my Decease and so continue to be paid during the Life of her the said Ann Picknall by the Person or Persons for the Time being who shall be intitled to the Freehold and Inheritance of the same Hereditament and premises And so charged and chargeable I give and devise unto my Nephew Michael Siffleet of Worth in the said County of Sussex Gentleman and his Assigns for and during the Term of his natural Life All those my Freehold Lands situate in the Parish of Newick aforesaid containing by Estimation four and twenty Acres of Woodland …. Commonly called Michell Wood and one Acre of Meadow with the Appurtenances abutting on Cinder Common on the West And also all that my Copyhold Messuage or Tenement wherein I now dwell called or known by the Name of Painters Together with the Barn Buildings Farm Lands hereditaments and premises thereto belonging… ~ now in the several Occupations of myself and the aforesaid John Gosling containing by Estimation twenty seven Acres more or less holden of the aforesadi Manor of Allington and which I have duly surrendered to the Use of my Will And also all that my aforesaid piece or Parcel of Wooland containing by Estimation twenty Acres more or less being the northern part of the said Woodlands called the Rough as divided from the other part thereof by the Hedge and Ditch aforesaid And from and after the Decease of my said Nephew Michael Siffleet and subject as aforesaid I give and devise the said Freehold and Copyhold Messuage or Tenement Buildings Land Woodland Hereditaments and premises with their Appurtenances unto his two Daughters Hannah (the Wife of Thomas Collens of Worth in the said County Yeoman / and Elizabeth Siffleet Spinster their Heirs and Assigns for ever as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants Provided also and my Will and Mind is that my said Nephew Michael Siffleet and his Assigns And also the said Hannah Collens and Elizabeth Siffleet and their Heirs and Assigns do and shall permit and suffer my said Housekeeper Ann Picknall to have the Use and Occupation of my ..… said Messuage or Tenement call painters with the Barn yard Close Garden Orchard and four several Pieces or Parcels of Land thereto belonging as now in my own Occupation containing together by Estimation seven Acres and anhalf more or less for and during the Term of her natural Life without paying any Rent for the same if she shall so long think proper to dwell and reside thereon and use and occupy the same but on such Terms only and longer And my Will further is and I do hereby order and direct that during the Existence of the aforesaid lease granted of the said northern part of the said Woodland call the Rough Together with the aforesaid Hereditaments and premises by me hereintofore given and devised in Remainder to my said Nephew Josiah Siffleet an Apportionment of the Rent ~ reserved by such Lease shall be made in Manner following (That is to say) two Pounds per Annum for and in Respect of the northern part of the said Woodland called the Rough And the Remainder of the Rent reserved by such Lease for and in Respect of the other Hereditaments and premises granted thereby.

Also I give and devise unto the said John Gosling of Newick aforesaid Fellmonger All that my aforesaid piece or Parcel of Land commonly called or known by the Name of the poor Field situate in the Parish of Newick containing by Estimation four Acres be the same more or less and now in the Tenure or Occupation of the said John Gosling being also Copyhold holden of the Manor of Allington and which I have duly surrendered to the Use of my Will To hold the same to him the said John Gosling his Heirs and Assigns for ever And my Will is and I do hereby order and direct That it shall and may be lawful to and for the said Jemima Siffleet my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet and Ann his Wife and the said Ann Picknall and their Assigns respectively in Case of Nonpayment of their respective Annuities aforesaid or any or either of them or any part of them as they shall severally become due and payable from Time to Time to raise the same by Distress and Sale of the Effects on all or any of the premises respectively charged therewith together with the Boots of such Distress and Sale.

And As to for touching and concerning my personal Estate I give and dispose thereof in Manner following (That is to say)

First I order direct that all such Debts as I shall happen to owe to any person or Persons whomsoever at the time of my Decease my Funeral Expenses and the Charges of … proving this my Will shall be paid thereout by my Executors hereafter named I give and bequeath unto my aforesaid Housekeeper Ann Picknall for and during the Term of her natural Life if she shall so long think proper to reside and dwell in my said Messuage or Tenement called painters but no longer The use and Usage only of All and every my household Goods and Furniture of whatever Sort Denomination or Kind And subject to such Use and Usage I give and bequeath my Clock and Case now standing in the Kitchen of my said Messuage or Tenement called Painters unto my aforesaid kinsman Stephen Siffleet To his own proper Use and Benefit.

And subject to such Use and Usage as aforesaid I give and bequeath All the Rest Residue and remainder of my said Household Goods and Furniture unto and among my six Kinsmen and Kinswomen Viz., Thomas Siffeet, William Siffleet James …. Siffleet Michael Siffleet Elizabeth Siffleet and Sarah Siffleet (the sons and Daughters of my aforesaid Nephew Thomas Siffleet) equally to be divided between them Share and Share alike to their several and respective Use and Uses And my Will is and I do hereby order and direct that as soon as conveniently may be after my … Decease an exact true and perfect Inventory shall be made and taken of All my said Household Goods and Furniture And that the same or a true copy thereof shall be signed by the said Ann Picknall and delivered to my Executors hereafter named and be Kept by them in order the better to ascertain such Household Goods and Furniture at the Decease of the said Ann Picknall or at her Discontinuing to dwell and reside on and use and occupy my said Messuage or Tenement Buildings Lands ( and premises called Painters Also I give and bequeath unto my said Housekeeper ~ Ann Picknall all my stock of provisions and liquors Cord Wood Fagots Sea Coal and other Fuel which shall at the time of my Decease happen to be in or about the said Messuage or Tenement Garden and Premises wherein I now dwell calle Painters The same to be delivered to her forthwith after my Decease To he own … proper Use and Benefit

Also I give and bequeath unto my aforesaid two ……Kinswomen Elizabeth Siffleet and Sarah Siffleet Daughters of my said Nephew Thomas Siffleet the several and respective Legacies or Sums of one hundred Pounds apiece of lawful Money of Greath Britain And unto Christian Sturt and Thomas Sturt (children of my Niece Elizabeth the Wife of William Sturt ) the several and respective Legacies or Sums of fifty pounds apiece of like lawful Money and unto my ….Kinswoman Mary Gansey (Daughter of my Niece Detemia (?) Gansey deceased) the … Legacy of Sum of fifty pounds of like Money The paid several and respective …. And I do hereby make constitute and ~ appoint my Friends Josiah Renvill of Newick aforesaid Wheelwright and Benjamin Beale of Barcomb in the said County of Sussex Farmer joint Executors of this my las Will and Testament And I do hereby give and bequeath unto the said …. Josiah Renvill and Benjamin Beale the several and respective Legacies or Sums of ten pounds apiece of like Money as a small Gratuity or Acknowledgment for their taking on themselves the Burthen of the Execution of this my Will (over and above all reasonable Allowances for their Expences and Loss of Time occasioned ~ thereby And I also appoint Richard Owen Stone of Mayfield in the said County of Sussex Gentleman an overseer or Supervisor of this my Will and to see the same duly performed

And lastly I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me made and declare this only to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I the said Thomas Siffleet the Testator have to the six first Sheets of this my last Will and Testament Contained in seven Sheets of paper set my Hand and to this the seventh and last Sheet Hereof my Hand and Seal also the seventh Day of December in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five

Signed sealed published and decalred by the said Thomas Siffleet the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his Request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our anems as Wineses the Word “Pounds” between the eighteenth and nineteenth lines from the Bottom of the third sheet being first interlined.
