Will of Thomas Argles of Fletching

Date signed: 10 May 1704, Probate date: 13 Apr 1708

In the name of God Amen the tenth day of May in ye year of our Lord one thousand seaven hundred and four I Thomas Argles of the parish of Fletching in the County of Sussex yeoman being in good health & of sound and perfect memory praised be God do make & declare this to be my last will & testament under my hand & seal in writing as followeth. Imp’rs I bequeath my soul into ye hands of Allmighty God & my body to decent buriall at my executors discretion. Item I give unto Mr Plaiersoomes Lowes widdow twenty pound of lawfull money but if shee hapen to die before ye same become due & payable I do give ye said twenty pounds to her heirs to be equally devided amongst them which said twenty pounds shall become due & payable by my executors hereinafter named within three months after my decease. Item I give to my kensman Thomas Pooke of Hawkhurst in the County of Kent twenty pounds. Item I give to my grandaughter Elizabeth ye wife of Henry Peirce of Darford in the County of Kent five pounds. Item I give to ye poor of Fletching twenty shillings all which legacies above mentioned I direct & apoynt to be severally paid by my executors here after named within six months after my decease. Item I do give & bequath unto Johannah my beloved wife all that my messuage or tenement with ye oasthouse garden orchard & land thereunto belonging & adjoyning containing by estemation fower acres calles Dows late one John Harts situate lying & being in Fletching aforesaid for & dureing ye term of her natural life & after her decease to my grandson Thomas Argles for ever. And allso I give & bequeath unto Johannah my beloved wife all that my tenement barne building garden orchard & land with ye apportenances thereunto belonging which I latly purchassed of one Abraham Humphry lyeing being & adjoyning to Grisselsdon Common in the parish of Fletching afforesaid for & dureing ye terme of her naturall life & after her discease to my grandson Thomas Argles & to ye heirs of his body lawfully to be begotten & for want of such heirs unto my kensman Thomas Pooke & his heirs for ever. Item I give unto William Heasman of Blackvenn in ye parish of Fletching aforsaid ye sum of five pounds to be paid him within six moths after my decease whome I make overseer to this my last will & testam’t. And lastly I do make constitute & ordain Johannah my beloved wife & Thomas Argles my grandson joynt executors of this my last will & testamt revokeing & disanulling all former wills & testaments by me heretofore made I have hereunto set my hand & seall being contained in one whole sheet of stampt paper.
