Whitehall, November 13, 1748. Whereas it bath been represented to their Excellencies the Lords Justices, that divers Robberies have been lately committed within the County of Sussex, particularly one on John Waters, near Buxted Bridge, on the 12th Day of October last, by five Persons armed, who took from him Twenty fix Pounds ; and one other Robbery on the 2d Day of November Instant, in the House of Richard Hafhenden, by four Men armed with Pistols and a Blunderbuss, who took out of the said House Thirty-five Pounds in Money, five Pieces of old Gold, two Silver Spoons marked I. H. a Silver Watch, a two handled tumbler, and three plain Gold Rings ; and whereas there is good Reason to believe that the Persons who committed the said Robberies are Part of a Gang of Smuglers, who have long infested the Coast of that County: Their Excellencies, for the better discovering the Persons concerned in the said Robberies, are pleased hereby to promise his Majesty’s most gracious Pardon to any one of the Offenders (except Thomas Kemp, of Flimwell, who some Time ago escaped out of Newgate, if it should appear that he was concerned in either of, the said Robberies) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices, so as he or they may be convicted of either of the said, Robberies ; And as a further Encouragement for such Discovery, a Reward of Fifty Pounds to such Person, or to any other Person or Persons making the same as aforesaid, to be paid on the Conviction of the offender.
