Whitehall, August 26, 1740. Whereas on Friday the 15th Instant, Mr. George Worge, of Battell, in Sussex, received a threatning Letter, requiring him to lay Five Guineas in the Porch of the said Parish Church, otherwise his dwelling House, situate in the said Parish of Battell, should be set on Fire ; and accordingly on the Sunday following, about half an Hour after Ten at Night, there came Two Men with an Intention, as there is Reason to believe, either to rob or burn the said Mr. Worge's House, but the Guard that he had placed there, firing upon them, they were obliged to retire, In order to discover the Person or Persons concerned in writing or sending the said Letter, or in making an Attempt upon the said House, their Excellencies the Lords Justices are pleased to promise His Majesty’s most gracious Pardon to any one of them who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices, so as he or they may be apprehended and convicted thereof. John Couraud. And as a further Encouragement, for such Discovery as aforesaid, the said George Worge hereby promises a Reward of Fifty Pounds to any Person or Persons making the same. George Worge. N. B. ‘Tis believed one of the Persons that made an Attempt upon Mr. Worge's Houle, was wounded. One was a very tall Man, and the other seem’d to be a square set Man.
