Will of John Bexhill of Warbleton

The fourteenth day of September Anno Domino 1590 and in the thirty-second year of the reign of our most gracious sovereign lady Elizabeth by the grace of God queen of England France and Ireland defender of the faith &c. I John Bexhill in the county of Sussex tanner being of good and perfect memory God be praised do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following

First I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my wife the best bedstead featherbed bolster blanket and coverlet I have with the things belonging to the same and all the corn and victuals that I have always provided for my house and the fourth part of all the rest of my household stuff. The other three parts I bequeath unto my daughters Debora Martha and Susanna to be equally divided unto them when they shall accomplish and come to the ages of twenty-one years or at the days of their several marriages which shall come first.

Item I give and bequeath unto Roda Breade my eldest daughter £20 of good and current English money £13 whereof to be paid her within three months after my decease and £7 within one year after my decease.

I bequeath also unto Debora and Martha my daughters to each of them £20 of good and current English money to be paid unto them within one year after my decease provided that if my said daughters at the same time before ....... shall be purposed to put out the said sums of money then my will and mind is that they shall …… the same to Hughe Bexhill and Abraham Bexhill my sons and to no man else if they will have it provided likewise pay unto each of them by the year 20s of good and current English money so long as they shall accept the same and also that they put my said daughters in sufficient bands with sufficient sureties to content and pay as well the said yearly rent of 20s. as also the said sums of £20 at such time or times as my said daughters shall appoint.

I will also unto Susan Bexhill my youngest daughter £20 of good and current English money to be paid unto her when she accomplish and come unto the age of twenty-one years or else be married which shall first come. …… until with said ….. my will and my will and mind is that mine executors pay unto her the said Elizabeth my wife for the use of my said daughters £20 by the year and also that my said executors put in sufficient bands unto the said Elizabeth my wife and truly to content and pay ? as usual the said yearly rent of 20s as also the aforesaid sum of £20 and household stuff before bequeathed unto her at the said age and day of her marriage provided always that if it happen the said Elizabeth my wife to marry again before my said daughter shall come to her age of twenty-one years and day of her marriage that then my will is that she and he with whom she shall marry shall before the day of their marriage be bound in sufficient bond with sureties into Henry Porter of Wartling and William Alye of Bread to be accomptable unto my said daughter for the said yearly rent of 20s when she shall come to her age of twenty-one years or day of her marriage But if it happen the said Susanna my daughter die and depart this transitory life before she come to her age and day of her marriage then my will and meaning i£ that the said sum of £20 before bequeathed be equally divided amongst the daughters then surviving.

I bequeath also unto the said Elizabeth my wife 40s of good and current English money to be paid to her by Abraham Bexhill my son within one month after my decease.

Item I bequeath unto Hughe Bexhill son of Hughe Bexhill my eldest son 20s to be paid to him ….. by Abraham Bexhill my eldest son within one year after my decease.

Item I bequeath unto Magnifie Bread the son of Thomas Bread of Warbleton 20s to be paid to him likewise by my son Abraham within one year after my decease.

I bequeath also unto John Scott the son of Thomas Scott of Warbleton 5s and unto Elizabeth Welford of the same parish 5s

I bequeath also unto John Garlands children of Dallington 5s

I bequeath also unto Elizabeth Morris of Heathfield the daughter of John Morris late of Heathfield deceased 5s and unto Joane Garlande of the same parish widow 5s All which my said legacies of ….. being paid my will is that Abraham my son shall pay unto the said …... within one year next after my decease and if it happen that the said Joane Garland die and depart this transitory life before the said time that then the said sum of 5s be paid unto Rebecka and …….. Garland the daughters of the said Joane Garland to be equally divided between them.

The residue of all my goods and cattells my debts and legacies first paid and fulfilled I give and bequeath unto Hughe and Abraham Bexhill my sons whom I make and ordain the executors of this my last will and testament.

And Henrye Porter of Wartling and Willyam Alys of Bread overseers of the execution of the same unto whom my will and mind is that the said Hughe and Abraham my executors put in sufficent bands within one month after my decease to pay and deliver unto the above mentioned overseers all the same said legacies at such time and in such manner as is above bequeathed Whereover of my lands and tenements this is my last will and testament.

First I give and bequeath unto Hughe Bexhill my eldest son and to his heirs for ever my tenements and land lying in the parish of Iden in the county of Sussex.

I give and bequeath also unto Obediah Bexhill my youngest son and to his heirs for ever my tenements and lands lying and being in the parish of Wittersham in the county of Kent and for want of heirs of his body lawfully begotten unto Hughe and Abraham my sons and to their heirs for ever.

During the nonage of the said Obediah my son my will and mind is that Elizabeth my wife and her assigns shall have the keeping government and bringing of him up provided always that if it happen that the said Elizabeth to marry again before my son Obediah shall come unto the age of twenty-one years that then my will and mind is that she and he with whom she shall marry shall put in sufficient bands and sureties to be accomptable unto Obediah my son for the rent of the land before bequeathed unto him.
