Will of Roger Gittens of Goring

In the name of god amen, the sixteenth day of Febraury in the year of our lord god a thousand five hundred eighty seven I Roger Gittnes of Goring the elder do make and ordain this my last will and testament. First I give my soul into the hands of my lord and god my creator and redeemer praise be to his glory and my body I give solely and freely unto the earth thereof nothing doubting but all the general ? I shall by the mighty power of god ? and lastly my worldly possessions and goods this I ordain I give to the cathedral church of Chichester eighty pence. Then I give to the church of Goring four shilling eight pence. Then I give unto the poor within Goring one quarter of wheat. Then I give unto my sonne Roger Gittens twenty pounds and two steer or bullocks which I have to hath after I die. I give unto my said son Roger one iron band but ? of iron banded wheels with the apparatus here to belonging. All the implements of household usage I give unto my daughter in law Jane at Chichester and at Bosham. I give unto my daughter Alice forty pounds. I give unto my daughter Agnes forty pounds this shall be delivered unto my daughters at the full age of eighteen years and if any of them should die before the full age of eighteen years then my will is that her portion belonging shall be equally divided between the other of my daughter the living and then my sonne Thomas Gittens and if said both my said daughters die before the said age or years be completed then my will is that both their portions remain and sole to be the only use of Thomas my said son. Then I give and bequeath unto my son in law Robert Kingham of Ferring, some and somes of money which be ? by my ? amounting to the some of forty eight pounds or there abouts . Then I give unto my friend Richard Moore four shillings. I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Cooke the daughter of Thomas Cooke one new lamb and to every other of his children four pence. I give unto very one of John Mitchells children of Cowfold six pence. I give unto John Colebrooks children of Chichester the some of forty shillings which ?. I give and bequeath unto Ed? Aspal of the city of London smith all right debts that he benefit by. Then I give and bequeath unto Edward Gratis my servant four bushels of barley. Then I give unto John John? my servant four bushels of barley. Then I give unto Robert Smyth my servant one bushel of barley. All the rest of my goods and chattels not bequeathed I give unto my wife Marion and Thomas Gittens my son both which I make my full and sole executors and with that Marion my said wife which to be half ? probate of this my will and then my mind and will is that she shall have been paid for her portion within one month after the probate of this my testament and the some of forty pounds and then my son Thomas by him to be my full and sole executor and hereby my wife to be exempt and paid of and from any other part apportion of my goods and if my said wife do late appoint the situation of this my will with my said son as about appointed then all my ? will is that devision of all said goods chattels and debts shall remain and be due unto them I mean my said son Thomas and my said wife by the virtue of their said executorship be equally and jointly made and appointed at any time and times after the probate of this my will by the discretions and debate of my overseers the said John Martyn Vicar and William Jones of the vicarage whom I make and appoint to be my sole executors of this until my sonne Thomas is of full age and I make and ? all things here in mentioned according to the ? meanings hereof and to the bidding of my said sonne in every point afore mentioned my will is that if my son Thomas dies before he be of the age of one and twenty years then the goods and chattels which should of right have been unto him by way of executorship should and be divided between to my son Roger Gittens Elizabeth Kingston the wife of Robert Kingston my daughter, Alice and Agnes my other daughters and to any of them who shall be living equally to be divided between them. Finally I do desire that my well beloved in the lord the said John myton and William Jones Thomas Cooke Robert Kingston and Roger Gittens my son to be my overseers of this my last will and testament to see the legacies and bequeaths within and willed by me to be duly paid executored and performed and in consideration of their pains herein I give to them five shillings eight pence. I have here unto ? the same for my last will and testament by me Roger Gittens.

After the making of his said will he further will that Marian his wife should have and hold to her during her natural life the garden and croft and grounds which he purchased of John Butcher of Goring. Witnesses of all John Myton, William Jones, Thomas Cooke, Robert Kingston and Roger Gittens the younger.
