In the name of God Amen The Eleaventh day of Aprill One Thousand Sixe hundred Fiftie and Two I JOHN GRATWICKE of NEEDS in the parrish of WEST GRINSTED in the County of Sussex yeoman being Sicke of body but of good and p[er]fect memory thankes be given to God therefore doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following First I give and bequeath my Soule unto Almighty God my maker, hopeing to inherit the eternall joyes of heaven by the merritts death and passion of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and redeemer and my body to be buried in the Church yard of the parish Church of WEST GRINSTED aforesaid

Item I give to the poore of the parrish of WEST GRINSTED aforesaid the Summ of Twenty shillings to be equally distributed among them within one moneth after my decease

Item I give and devise unto my Sonne WILLIAM GRATWICKE and to his heires for ever, one Messuage or Tenement and Lands with all and every their Appurtenances Com[m]only called or knowne by the name of HOOKE LAND or by what other name or names soever the same is called or knowne now in the Tenure and occupac[i]on of WILLIAM FRANCIS or his Assignes and conteyning by Estimac[i]on Fourescore Acres be the same more or lesse scituate lying and being in the parish of BILLINGSHURST in the sayd County of Sussex And my Will and meaning is that JOANE my beloved wife shall receave the issues rents and profits therof untill my said Sonne WILLIAM shall accomplish the age of one and Twenty yeares, for and towards his Educac[i]on and bringing upp, if soe long my said wife remaine a Widdow, but if she shall happen to Marry before my said Sonne WILLIAM shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares, that then my Will is that JOHN GRATWICKE my Eldest Sonne shall receave the issues, rents and proffitts of the said Lands from and imediatly after my said wife shall be soe married for and untill my said Sonne shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares for and towards his Educac[i]on and bringing upp

Item I will and bequeath unto my said Sonne WILLIAM the Sum[m] of Threescore pounds of Lawfull money of England to be paid unto him when he shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares, part of which s[ai]d Sum[m] of Threescore pounds was the guift of JOANE SCOTCHFORD of WISTON in the said County Widdow given unto my said Sonne WILLIAM by hir now last Will and Testament , as by the said Will of the said JOANE my mother may plainly appeare

Item I give and bequeath unto my Sonne PHILLIP the Sum[m] og Three hundred pounds of lawfull money of England and one pewter Flaggon to be paid and delivered unto him when he shall accomplish his Age of one and Twenty yeares and my will is that my Sonne JOHN GRATWICKE shall pay after the rate of Five pounds p[er] Cent p[er] Ann[um] for the use therof unto JOANE my beloved wife for soe long time as she shall remaine a Widdow and untill my said Sonne PHILLIP shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares and if my said wife shall happen to marry before my said Sonne PHILLIP shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares, that then my will and meaning is that from and imediatly after hir said marriage my said Sonne JOHN shall have the educac[i]on and bringing upp of my said Sonne PHILLIP untill he shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares for the use and increase of his said porc[i]on And if my said Sonne PILLIP shall happen to decease before he shall accomplish his said Age of one and Twenty yeares that then my will and meaning is that the said porc[i]on of my said Sonne PHILLIP P soe to him by this my Will bequeathed shall be equally devided between my daughter ELIZABETH my said Sonne WILLIAM and my daughter JANE, and to be paid unto them when they shall severally attaine to their severall Ages of One and Twenty yeares

Item I give unto my daughter ELIZABETH the sum[m] of One hundred and Threescore pounds beside the sum[m] of Forty pounds given unto my said daughter ELIZABETH by JOANE SCOTCHFORD aforesaid Widdow my mother, and to be paid unto hir within three moneths next after my decease

Item I give unto my daughter JANE the sum[m] of One hundred and Threescore pounds beside the sum[m] of Forty pounds which was likewise given unto hir by the last Will and Testament of the said JOANE SCOTCHFORD and to be paid unto hir when she shall accomplish hir Age of One and Twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen, And if my said daughter JANE shall happen to dye before she shall accomplish the said Age of One and Twenty yeares or day of marriage, that thenmy Will is that hir said porc[i]on by this my Will soe willed and bequeathed unto hir shall be equally devided between my Sonne WILLIAM PHILLIPP and my daughter ELIZABETH, and to be paid unto them when they shall accomplish their severall Ages of One and Twenty yeares

Item I will unto my said daughter JANE one Beddstedle now standing in the Parlour Chamber togeather with the feather bedd and the appurten[an]ces thereunto belonging

Item I will and bequeath unto my said daughter JANE two paire of tire sheetes w[hi]ch said sheetes Bedstedle bedd and Appurten[an]ces my will is shall be delivered unto my said daughter JANE when she shall accomplish hir Age of One and Twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen

Item I will and bequeath unto JOANE my wife two shillings and six pence and my will is that she shall have the use of halfe my household stuffe for soe long time as she shall remaine a Widdow

All the residue of my goods and Chattells my debts being paid and my funerall expences discharged I give and bequeath unto my said Sonne JOHN whom I make my Sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament and I doe desire my loveing freinds JOHN FORD and RICHARD HARREDEN to be overseers of this my last Will and Testament And I will and bequeath unto them for their paines the Sum[m] of Tenn shillings apiece In witnesse wherof I the said JOHN GRATWICKE to each sheet of paper (being three in number) have subscribed my name and to all of them sett my seale the day and yeare first in this my Will written JOHN GRATWICKE his marke published and declared in the presence of us RICHARD WOOD JONATHAN SOPER his marke ALLIN BOTTING

This Will above written was proved at London the fifth day of May in the yeare of our Lord God One Thousand Six hundred Fifty and two before Robert Wiseman doctor of Lawes and Surrogate to the right wor...S[ir] NATHANIELL BRENT Knt doctor of Lawes and Master or Keeper of the prerogative Court by the Oath of JOHN GRATWICKE the Sonne and Sole Executor in the said Will named to whom Administrac[i]on was Com[m]itted of all and Singular the Goods Chattells and debts of the said deceased Hee being first sworne well and truely yo Administer the same &c
