Will of John Hesemen the Elder of Barcombe

In the name of God, Amen: The Sixt day of June in the first yeare of the raigne of our soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God King of England Scotland ffrance & Ireland defender of the faith etc. 1625

I John Heseman thelder of Barcombe in the County of Sussex yeoman know[ing] how Certeyne death is & how uncerteyned the Tyme is doe now in my health ordeyne & make this my last will and Testament in manner and forme following ffirst I doe willingly and w[i]th free hart give agayne into the hands of God my Creator my soule and spiritt nothing doubting but that for his infinite mercies sett forth in the pretious blood of his deare sonne our saviour Jesus Christe hee will receave the same my soule into his glory & place amonst the blessed Company of hevenly Angells

And as Concerning my body my will is to bee buried at the discretion of my Executor.

Item I give to the poore of Barcombe Ten shillings

Item I give to every one of my godchildren Twelve pe[nce] A peece

Item I give & bequeath unto my brother Nicholas Heseman Ten pounds

Item I give to Anne Heeman wife of the sayd Nicholas Heseman foure pounds

Item I give to every one of the children of my sayd brother Nicholas Heseman fforty shillings A peece w[hi]ch sayd severall somes so given & bequeathed my will is shalbee payd w[i]thin one yeare next after my decease

Item I give & bequeath unto my brother Henry Heseman & Jane his wife five pounds A peece to bee payd w[i]thin one yeare next after my decease

Item I give & bequeath to William Heseman & his heires one of the sonnes of the sayd Henry Heseman One peece or parcell of ffreehold land Called or knowne by the name of Cryslings (?) Conteyninge by estimacon seven Acres be it more of lesse lying in Barcombe aforesayd

Item I give to the sayd William all such sheepe of myne as are now in the Custodye or keeping of the sayd William

Item I give to Nicholas Heseman and William Heseman sonnes of the sayd William Heseman five pounds A peece to bee put out to the best use and profitt untill they shall accomplishe theire full ages of Twenty and one yeares at the discre[con] of my Executor And yf either of them happen to dye before they accomplishe theire ages then my will and meaning is one to bee the others heire

Item I give to Jane wife of Richard Markewicke ffive pounds to bee payd to the sayd Jane w[i]thin one whole yeare next after my decease.

Item I give to Richard Markewicke & Jane Markewicke two of the Children of the sayd Richard Markewicke ffive pounds A peece to bee payd w[i]thin two yeares after my decease to Richard Markewicke the father hee giving security to my Executor to put it out to the best advantage untill they shall accomplishe theire severall ages of one & Twenty yeares And yf one doe dye the other to bee his heire.

Item I give & bequeath to Henry Heseman sonne of Henry Heseman my brother Twenty pounds. To ffrancis Heseman another of my sayd brothers sonnes Twenty pounds to George Heseman another of his sonnes Twenty shillings And to Mary Heseman & Anne Heseman two other of my sayd brothers Children Ten pound A peece To bee payd to either of them when they shall accomplishe theire everall ages of one & Twenty yeares

Item I give and bequeath to John Jenner Twenty pounds to bee payd w[i]thin one yeare after my decease

Item I give & bequeath to William Jenner & Richard Jenner brothers of the sayd Heseman John Jenner Twenty shillings A peece To Anne Jenner sister of the sayd John Jenner ffive pounds And to Mary Jenner wife of Thomas Bodell Twenty shillings , w[hi]ch sayd severall somes my will is shalbee payd w[i]thin one whole yeare next after my decease

The Residue of all my goods and chattells not before given nor bequeathed my debts first payd my funerall expences discharged & my Legacies payd I will & bequeath to John Heseman sonne of my brother Henry Heseman whome I make sole Executor of this my last will & Testament And I hartily intreat my brothers Henry Heseman and Thomas Norman(?) of Buxted to bee my Overseers I give to either of them five shillings A peece for theire paynes herein to bee taken In witness whereof I the sayd John Heseman thelder to this my last will and Testament have hereunto sett my hand & Seale the day & yeare first above written John Heseman
