In the Name of God Amen I JOHN WARD of CHAMPIONS in WESTGRINSTED in the County of Sussex Esquire being in good and perfect Health of Body and of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding praised be Almighty God therefore Considering the frailty of my own health the certainty of Death and the uncertainty of my departure out of this mortall Life And being willing and desirous as far as in me lyeth to settle the Worldly Estate wherewithal God of his Infinite Goodnesse and mercy hath blessed me so that no difference may arise about the same after my Decease for want of disposal thereof doe make ths my last Will and Testament in manner following hereby revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of almighty God my Creator hoping and assuredly believing in and through the alone merits of his son Jesus Christ to have free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins and Everlasting Life And my body I commit to the Earth to be decently interred according to the discretion of my Executrixes hereafternamed And as touching the Worldly Estate which it hath pleased God of his goodness to bestow upon me I give devise bequeath and dispose of the same as followeth

Imprimis I Give and bequeath unto my daughter ANN WARD the sum[m]e of six hundred pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be laid out and paid by my Executrixes hereafter named for Lands to be purchased for and in the name of my said Daughter ANN WARD and her heires And that until Lands shall be soe purchased my Executrixes shall pay unto my said Daughter ANN WARD the yearly sum[m]e of Twenty four pounds for the Interest of the said six hundred pounds Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter MARY WARD the sum[m]e of six hundred pounds of lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid unto her by my Executrixes hereafter named within six months next after my decease Item I give and devise unto my dear and loving wife ANNE WARD (in lieu and satisfaction of her Dower and Thirds which she may have or clayme out of all my mannors Messuages Lands and Tenements) One Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of Threescore Pounds per annum of lawfull money of Great Britain Cleere and free from all manner of Taxes whatsoever To be paid unto her by four equall Quarterly payments for and during the Terme of her naturall Life and to be secured and paid to her and her assigns out of all my Messuages Farms Lands Tenements and Hereditaments lying and being in the severall parished of WEST GRINSTED COWFOLD ASHURST and CUCKFIELD Together with Liberty and power to and for my said Dear and loving wife ANNE the use and usage only of all my Inndoore household Goods and utensils of Houshold Silver plate whatsoever being in my now Dwelling house called CHAMPIONS aforesaid for and during the Terme of her naturall Life and Dwelling at CHAMPIONS aforesaid And from and immediately after her Decease or willfull departure from CHAMPIONS aforesaid I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my Executrixes hereafter named to be equally divided between them share and share alike Item I give and devise unto my said Dear and loving wife ANN All the Rings Jewells Medalls or pieces of Gold or silver money which are or is commonly in her custody and kept by her now to be by her enjoyed and disposed of as She shall think fitt Item I give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of WESTGRINSTED aforesaid the sum[m]e of Forty shillings of lawfull money of Great Britain And also to the poor of the severall parishes of COWFOLD ASHURST and CUCKFEILD and to the poor of every of the said parishes the sum[m]e of Twenty shillings for each parish of like lawfull money to be paid to them respectively within six months next after my decease by my Executrixes hereafter named Item I Doe give and devise unto my two loving daughters ELIZABETH WARD and SARAH WARD the sum[m]e of Two Thousand Pounds equally between them To be raised by Sale of Tymber to be cutt and felled from all or any part of my Lands and Grounds within one year next after my decease And I do give and devise unto my two Daughters ELIZABETH and SARAH and their assignes Labourers and Workmen full power to enter into and upon all or any my said Lands and Grounds And there to fell cutt down Grub up take and convert so many Timber Trees as shall raise the said sum[m]e of Two thousand Pounds cleer of all Charges and payments whatsoever And the same Timber and Trees and all the plank Boards Pynns Barke Wood Faggotts Coals and other materials that shall come arise or be made of or from the same to carry away with Horses Oxen Waggons Waynes Carts amd other Carriages without paying or allowing any thing for the same or for the Damage or spoyle to be Done thereby Item I doe make constitute Ordaine and appoint my loving daughters ELIZABETH WARD and SARAH WARD Joynt Executrixes of this my last Will and Testament and I Doe give and bequeath unto them the said ELIZABETH and SARAH all the rest and residue of my money Goods Chattells and personall Estate whatsoever not before hereby given or bequeathed after my debts Legacys and Funerall Expenses shall be fully paid and discharged to be equally divided between them share and share alike

Item I do give and devise unto my son JOHN WARD for and during the Term of his naturall Life only All my Mannors Messuages Farms Lands Tenements and Heraditaments whatsoever lying and being in the severall parishes of WESTGRINSTED COWFOLD ASHURST and CUCKFEILD or elsewhere within the said County of Sussex provided always and my Will and meaning is That in Case my said son JOHN WARD shall at any time hereafter give sell convey or otherwise depart with my said mannors messuages Lands Tenem[en]ts or hereditaments or any part thereof or his Right Tytle or Interest thereunto to any person or persons whatsoever That then and from thenceforth the Devise of the same mannors messuages and Lands made to my said son JOHN WARD as aforesaid as to such part or parts as he shall soe sell or depart with shall cease and be void And the Rents Issues and profits thereof or of any part thereof shall not be payable to or recoverable by aby person or persons whatsoever to whom he shall give sell or convey the same or any part thereof But the same shall immediately goe and descend unto my said daughters ELIZABETH and SARAH and their heires as Tenants in Common and not as Joynt Tenants o be held and enjoyed by them the said ELIZABETH and SARAH for and during the naturall Life of my said son JOHN WARD And from and immediately after the death and decease of my said son JOHN WARD I do give and devise all my said mannors Messuages Farmes Lands Tenements and Hereditaments whatsoever situate lying and being in the severall parishes of WEST GRINSTED COWFOLD ASHURST and CUCKFEILD or elsewhere within the said County of Sussex with their and every of their appurten[an]ces (subject and liable t the payment of the said Annuity of Threescore pounds per annum herein before given and devised unto my said dear and loving Wife ANNE for the Terme of her naturall Life) To the first son of the body of my said son JOHN WARD lawfully begotten and the Heires of the Body of such first son lawfully Issuing And for want of such Issue To the second son of the Body of my said son JOHN WARD lawfully begotten And of the Heires males of the Body of such second son lawfully begotten And for want of such Issue To the Third Fourth Fifth Sixth Seventh Eighth Ninth and Tenth son and sons of the body of my said son JOHN WARD lawfully to be begotten and of the Heires males of their respective bodies lawfully Issuing the Elder of such son and sons and the Heirs male of his Body beng always preferred before the younger of such son and sons and the Heires male of the Body and for want of such Issue To my said daughters ELIZABETH WARD and SARAH WARD and their Heires and assignes for ever as Tenants in Common and not Joynt Tenants Provideth always And my Will and meaning is and I doe hereby Will direct and appoint That it shall and may be lawfull to and for my said son JOHN WARD t settle and assure One Annuity or yearly Rent Charge not exceeding the yearly sum[m]e of One hundred Pounds per annum upon any woman whom he shall hereafter marry to be had and received by her for her Joynture During the Terme of her naturall Life out of all my said Mannors Messuages Farmes Lands Tenements and Hereditaments In case such Wife shall happen to survive and outlive my said son JOHN WARD And that in case my said son JOHN WARD shall not happen to have any Issue Male But shall have Issue Female Then my Will and meaning is That the Daughters of my said son JOHN WARD shall have and Enjoy out of all my said mannors messuages Farmes and Lands One Annuity or yearly Rent Charge of One Hundred Pounds clear and free from all Taxes and Payments for and during the Terme of Twenty years next after the death and decease of my said son JOHN WARD and the last Wife which he shall happen to marry for her maintenance Education and raising Fortunes for all and every the daughters which my said son JOHN WARD shall happen to have by any Wife or Wives which he shall happen to marry In Witness whereof I the said JOHN WARD have to this my last Will and Testament containeth in three Sheets of paper sett my hand and seal to each sheet of paper the sixteenth day of NOVEMBER in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred and Seventeene JOHN WARD Signed sealed published and declared by the said JOHN WARD the Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who likewise subscribed our names as Witnesses in the presence of the said Testator JOHN LINFEILD JON TAYLUER AUSTEN COOM
