Will of Robert Moone of Mayfield

Date signed: 22 Feb 1642, Probate date: 23 Nov 1648

In the name of God Amen, the Two and Twentieth day of February in the year of our Lord God One Thousand Six Hundred and Forty Two. And in this the seventeenth year of the reign of our most Gracious Sovereign Lord King Charles by the grant of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King defender of the Faith (???)

I Robert Moone of the Brook in the Parish of Mayfield in the County of Sussex, yeoman being sound in body and of a perfect remembrance praise God. And therefore do ordaine and make this my last will and testament in a manner and form following: First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God that gave it trusting in the merits of Jesus Christ that is his only son and my only Saviour for the pardon of all my sins and for everlasting salvation. And my body to be buried in some decent place of burial at the direction of my executor Thomas.

I give unto Elizabeth Relfe the wife of Henry Relfe my eldest daughter the sum of four pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid to her

In Margin:

{by my son Robert Moone at the end of three years next after my decease Item I give unto my daughter Joane the wife of John Woodgate the sum of Ten Pounds of the Lawful money of England to be paid to her at the end of three years next after my decease.

Also my will and meaning is if Joane my daughter dies within the time limiting then her legacy shall be equally divided between her children and shall be put out for them by my overseers in trust until they shall accomplish their (several?) age of one and twenty years}

*at the end of three years of my decease and if it shall happen that my two daughters or either of them shall die within the space of those three years next after my decease so then my will and meaning that the sum unto before bequeathed unto my two daughters or either of them shall be equally distributed between their children. That is to say if my daughter Elizabeth dies within the time limit, that then her legacy shall be equally divided between her children and be put out for them by my Overseers in trust until they shall accomplish their several ages of One and Twenty years and then it shall be lawfull for all of them or either of them to demand and receive their several pts further my will and meaning is that my two sonnes in law Henry Relfe and John Woodgate shall receive the profits or interest of that legacy bequeathed to their or either of their children till they shall accomplish of their (several?) age of One and twenty, if it happens that they or either of their wives shall happen to die within the time limited. Item I give unto John Moone my youngest son the sum of Five and Twenty Pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto him by my son Robert Moone at the end of Five years next after my decease

Item I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Moone my youngest daughter the sum of Ten pounds of Lawfull money of England to be paid unto her by my son Robert Moone when she shall accomplish the age of One and Twenty years.

Item I give to Robert Relfe and Thomas Relfe the sons of Henry Relfe my son in law the sum of Twenty shillings apiece to be paid to them by my son Robert Moone when they accomplise their several ages of One and Twenty years.

Item I give to Thomas Woodgate and William Woodgate and Elizabeth Woodgate twenty shillings apiece to be paid to them when they shall accomplish their several ages of one and twenty years.

Item I give unto Elizabeth my wife five Pounds a year during her natural life to be paid unto her by my son Robert Moone at the first (-------) or (-------) of three years by (-------) equal (portions?). That is to say Twenty five shillings every Quarter. The first payment to begin at the nextfeast of Quaterday after my (demise?) and if it so shall happen that the said yearly part of free funds shall be behind and unpaid in part or in whole after and of the feasts in which it aught to be paid by the space of One and Twenty days, that then it shall be lawful for Elizabeth my wife for to enter into the land and premises of Robert Moone my son called Brooke in Mayfield after said or unto part or whole thereof and their to distrain and the difference of distrain then and thereto had and taken for to (said?) (daise?) (beare?) and carried away and the forms for to detain and keep until the yearly rent of five pounds a year or any part thereof be fully satisfied and paid. Also my will and meaning is that Elizabeth my wife shall have one chamber at the North East end of my house wherin I now dwell with (fixe and flit?). And (feord?) and (agree?) so long as she remained a widow and no longer to and from her said chamber

Item I give unto Robert Moone my eldest son my home wherin I now live with all Barns, Buildings, Orchards and Gardens and (Pediments?) thereonto belonging and now in the occupation of me the said Robert Moone the father situate lying and being in Mayfield called the Brooke to him and his heirs provided always that Robert shall paid all those my legacies before bequeathed.

Item I give to Robert my son the table standing in the hall with the frame and forms thereunto belonging. And one joined bedstead and one (-----?) shaft and one (-----) cupboard a great (spilt?)

Item I give to my son Robert the best horse that I shall have at the time of my demise. The rest of my goods and chattels bequeathed I give to my wife and John my youngest son whom I make my sole appointee of this my last will and testament providing always that my (appointee?) paid my dues and debts which none (Ferod?) and discharge my funeral expenses (mind?) I do and (amid) and make Thomas (Waller/Walfet?) of Beddingham in Sussex and Robert Moone of Mayfield aforesaid my overseer of (-----?) for this my last will performed.

And my will and meaning is that Robert my son shall fail or neglect to those (legatees?) I have bequeathed and appointed him to pay that then it shall be lawful for my (overseer?) to enter appointed lands and (Thandom?) bequeathed to Robert my son and that to hold and enjoy with all the profits thereof until such time as Robert my son has paid my legatees or (groom?) sufficient (sensitive?) to my Overseer for the payment thereof.

Witness unto this my last will and testament being written in two sheets of paper, I have to each of them left my mark.

Memorandum the (wife?) so long as she (Proposh?) herself a widow and no longer which so undefined in the second leaf between the (Mynth?) and (South Lynde?) was introduced before the ensealing of this my will and so it is (intersigned?) at diverse places Robert Moone. Sealed and delivered in the presence of John Smith, John Relfe, Robert Relfe.
