Will of John Channtler of Mayfield

In the name of God Amen I John Channtler of Mayfield in the County of Sussex Gent being sick in body but of a sound mind praised be God doe make my last Will as followeth. First I resigne my soule to God who gave it me and my body I committ to the earth to be decently buryed at the discretion of my executrix hereafter named. Item I give unto the poore of Mayfield five pounds to be distributed amongst them within two moneths after my decease. Item I give to my brother Eagles and his sonne John my sister Benge my brother Porter and my cozen Edward Channtler five pounds apeice to be paid unto them and every and either of them within one yeare next after my death. Item I give unto my deare mother Mrs Elizabeth Channtler and Mrs Lucy Channtler my sister twenty pounds apeice to be paid unto them and either of them within one moneth next after my death. Item I give unto my father and mother in law Baker and Mr Hooper and his wife a ring of tenne shillings value to be delivered and given to them and every of them at my funerall. All which said summe and sumes of money and rings I will my executrix hereafter named shall pay and deliver unto the partyes afore said according to the true meaning of this my Will and that the same shall be raised as well out of my personall estate as alsoe out of my messuages lands and tenements hereafter devised and given to my executrix hereafter named. All the rest and reside of my goods cattle chattles bills bonds mortgages and all other my creditts rights and personall estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my deare and loving wife whom I make sole executrix of this my last Will and Testament whom I earnestly desire to pay my debts legacies and funerall expences and to performe this my Will and the better to enable my said wife and executrix to pay my debts and legacies and to performe this my Will I give will and devise all that my messuage or tenement gardens orchards and appurtenances scituate lying and being in Mayfield aforesaid and now in my owne occupacon and alsoe all lands marsh lands hereditaments and premisses with their and every of their appurtenances now in the occupacon of John Filtness and William Weston or their assignee or assignes lying and being in Haylesham in the said County and alsoe all that my customary or copyhold messuage farme lands tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances now in the occupacon of one Ellis and scituate lying and being in Langston in the said County which I have lately surrendered to the use of my will and alsoe all other my freehold and copyhold messuages lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever unto the said Elizabeth my deare wife for and during the terme of her naturall life and from and after her decease then I give and devise the same messuages lands tenements and hereditaments with their and every of their appurtenances unto the heires of her body by me begotten and to be begotten. And for default of such issue I give and devise the same with their appurtenances unto the said Elizabeth my deare wife and to her heires and assignes forever charged and chargeable to and for the payment of all my debts and legacies aforesaid. And I doe revoke all former Wills by me made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale the thirteenth day of June one thousand six hundred eighty five Annoq Regii Regis Jacobi scdi primo. Jo: Channtler.

(Latin) Proved at London 8 August 1685 before Leoline Jenkins, Doctor of Laws &c by Elizabeth Channtler relict of the said deceased and executrix named in the said Will to whom administration was granted &c
