Will of Thomas Turner of Hartfield

In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Turner of the parish of Hartfield in the county of Sussex, yeoman, being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect memory and understanding do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say), In the first place I give and bequeath my soul unto God who gave it hoping for mercy through the merits of my saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my executrix herein after named;

I likewise will and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary Turner the sum or annuity of five pounds by the year which said annuity I will to be paid quarterly and every quarter of the year during the term or time of the natural life of the said Mary Turner by my executrix herein after named;

I likewise will that my said wife [Elizabeth name erased] Mary Turner shall during the term or time of her natural life only, have possess, use and enjoy all or any such goods, utensils or moveables and such as shall or may be found in my now dwelling house at Snow’s Hole in Hartfield aforesaid and such only as shall by the determination or arbitration of two or more yeoman of the parish of Hartfield aforesaid be adjudged and determined to be needful and necessary for the use, occupation and behoof of my said wife Mary Turner,

All the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate whatsoever I do give devise and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Sarah Turner (whom I do hereby make and constitute full and sole executrix of and in this my last will and testament) and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten and if it shall happen that my said daughter Sarah Turner shall or should die without issue of her body lawfully begotten as aforesaid, then and from thenceforth I will, devise and bequeath all and every my said estate, real and personal, unto my beloved cousin William Bennet son of Edward Bennet of Hellingly in the county of Sussex and if it shall happen that the said William Bennet should die without lawful issue, I will that the said my estate, real and personal, shall go, descend and be demised to and equally divided between Ann Bennet and Jane Bennet, daughters of William Bennet of Hellingly aforesaid,

And I likewise will that if and provided that the said William Bennet shall have or come to the possession or enjoyment of my said estate as aforesaid that the said William Bennet shall within one year after the decease of my said daughter Sarah Turner, pay or cause to be paid unto Elizabeth West, Samuel West, Sarah West and John West the sum of one pound of lawful money of Great Britain unto each of them, being the sons and daughter of Samuel West of Mayfield in the county of Sussex aforesaid.

And I do hereby declare, ordain and make this my last will and testament hereby utterly revoking and disannulling all former wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty first day of June in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and thirty eight.
