Uckfield, (East Sussex)

Parish picture

Uckfield for many years was famous for its wool and agricultural trade, lying on a river crossing. A proportion of the produce produced in the area was transported by barge down the Uck to the Ouse, then to Lewes and finally to the coast at Seaford and Newhaven.

The church was extensively rebuilt and enlarged with aisles and gallery in 1839, the chancel extended in 1889.

Parish picture

The name is derived from the river Uck which flows through the village (literally the field on the river Uck). A small village until the railway arrived in the 1850s, Uckfield quickly grew into a small town. The village was originally located at the top of the high street near to the church, but the railway which was laid alongside the river, provided a catalyst for growth, and the houses and shops now spread right down into the valley.

Perhaps following the terrible flooding in the lower part of the town in October 2000, the residents wish they had remained on higher ground!
