Harrison's description (1911):

Erected by Butterfield in 1850 for Archdeacon (afterwards Cardinal) Manning, shortly before his secession to the Church of Rome. In the churchyard (S.E. of church) is the tomb of Richard Cobden, the Apostle of Free Trade, who died in 1865. He was born at an old farmhouse in the neighbouring hamlet of Heyshott.
