Will of Richard Awood of West Grinstead

In the name of God Amen Theight and twentith Day of Marche 1653 I RICHARD AWOOD of WESTGRINSTED in the County of Sussex yeoman being sicke of bodye but of good and perfect memory thanks be given to God therefore doe make and ordeine this to be my last will and Testament in manner and forme following First I give and bequeath my Soule unto Almighty God my maker hoping to enioy the kingdome of heaven by the Merrits deathe and passion of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer and my body to be buried at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter menc[i]oned

Item I give and bequeath to the poore of the said parish of WESTGRINSTED the sum[m]e of fortye shillings to be distributed amongst them at the discrec[i]on of my Executrix within one month next after my decease

Item I give and bequeath unto my eldest Daughter JOANE AWOOD and her heires All that my messuage or Tenement and Lands w[i]th the Appurtenance called PACCHINGE sittuate lyeing and being in the said parish of WESTGRINSTED except and reserved out of the said Lands the number of twoe and twenty of the best Oakes or trees growing upon the said Lands which I give and bequeath unto ELIZABETH my other Daughter for and in recompence of the moyetye or halfe of the said Messuage and Lands w[hi]ch shee the said ELIZABETH ought by lawe to have had if this my will had not been made together with full power for the said ELIZABETH and her Assignes at any reasonable time or times in the yeare during the terme of five yeares next after my decease to enter into and upon the said Lands And to fell cutt downe saw Cleave role and carry away the sayd trees w[i]th Waines Carts and carriage Oxen and horses in by and through the usuall waies & passages convenient And if my said Daughter JOANE or her Assignes shall refuse to permitt and suffer my said Daughter ELIZABETH and her Assignes peaceably and quietly to enioy the said trees before excepted and in such manner as is aforesayd according to the intent and true meaning of this my will that then I give and devise unto my said Daughter ELIZABETH and to hir heires the moietye of the Appurtenances thereunto belonging

Item I give and devise unto my said Daughter JOANE one other Tenement and Lands thereunto belonging and RAWKINS MEADE with all and every the Barne buildings and Appurtenances thereunto belonging scittuate lyeing and being in the p[ar]ish of WESTGRINSTEAD aforesaid to have and to hold to her the said JOANE and hir hir* [sic] of good tyre sheetes and three paire of good towen sheetes and twoe dozen of Napkins

All the residue of my goods Chattles and household stuffe whatsoever my Debts and Legacies being paied and my funerall expences discharged I give and bequeath unto ELIZABETH my youngest daughter whome I make my sole Executrix of this my last will and Testament In witnesse whereof I the said RICHARD AWOOD have hereunto sett my hand and Seale the Day and yeare first above written/ RICHARD WOOD / published and declared in the presence of ROHN [JOHN?] FORDE ALIN BOTTING

This will was proved at Westminster the tenth of Februarye in the yeare of our Lord one thousand six hundred fifty and three before the Judges for probate of wills and granting Administrac[i]ons lawfully authorized by the Oathe of ELIZABETH AWOOD the daughter and Executrix named in the said Will to whome the Administracion was Com[m]itted of all and singular the Goods Chattles and Debts of the said deceased shee being first sworne by Com[m]ission well and truly to administer the same .
