Will of John Greenfield of Petworth

This is the last Will and Testament of me John Greenfield of Petworth in the County of Surrey Innkeeper that is to say I give and devise unto my Son John Orsborne Greenfield and his heirs all that my freehold Messuage or Tenement with the Garden and other the appurtenances thereof known by the name of the Angel Inn in Petworth aforesaid and now in my own occupation and also all that and those my Copyhold or Customary Messuage or Cottage Stables Buildings Garden and other the appurtenances holden of the Honor and Manor of Petworth ad situate in Petworth aforesaid opposite to the said freehold premises and now in the several occupations of William Lucas and myself and to which I have lately procured my said Son John to be admitted to hold the said freehold and Copyhold Hereditaments and Premises and all my Estate and Interest therein respectively unto my said Son John Orsborn Greenfield and his heirs for ever according to the tenure and nature of the same respectively also I give and devise unto my Son James Greenfield and his heirs all those my Copyhold or Customary Messuages Cottages Tenements Orchard Gardens and Hereditaments with their respective appurtenances situate at Byworth in the Parish of Petworth aforesaid and holden of the Manor of Byworth and Warningcamp and now in the several occupations of William Pullen Richard Burningham my Mother and myself to hold the same unto my said Son James Greenfield and his heirs forever according to the Custom of the said Manor and after Payment of all my just debts funeral and Testamentary expences I give and bequeath all the clear residue and remainder of my personal Estate and effects whatsoever wheresoever and of what nature or kind soever unto my said two Sons John Orsborn Greenfield and James Greenfield to be divided between them share and share alike and it is my intention to share the whole of my Real and Personal Property as equally as possible betwixt my said two Sons I do hereby direct that as soon as conveniently may be after my decease a fair valuation be made by three indifferent Persons or any two of them one to be chosen by each of my said two Sons and the third by the two persons first chosen of my freehold and Copyhold Hereditaments hereby devised To my said Son John as aforesaid and that a like valuation shall at the same time be made of the freehold Copyhold Hereditaments hereby devised to my said Son James as aforesaid and I further direct and declare my Will to be that in case the value of the said ffreehold and Copyhold Hereditaments so as aforesaid devised to my said Son John shall according to such valuation exceed the value of the said Copyhold Hereditaments hereby devised to my said Son James then a sum equal to the amount of such excess shall be made to my said Son James by my said Son John out of the said freehold and Copyhold Hereditaments devised to him my said Son John as aforesaid and which I hereby charge with the payment of the amount of such excess accordingly but in case the value of the said Copyhold Hereditaments so as aforesaid devised to my said Son James shall according to such valuation exceed the value of the said freehold and copyhold hereditaments hereby devised to my said Son John then I will and direct that a sum equal to the amount of such last mentioned excess shall be paid to my said Son John by my said Son James out of the said Copyhold Hereditaments devised to him my said Son James as aforesaid and which I hereby charge with the payment of the amount of the said last mentioned excess accordingly and I hereby nominate and appoint my friend William Wild of Petworth aforesaid Malster and my said Son John Orsborn Greenfield Executors In trust of this my Will In Witness whereof I the said John Greenfield the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and Seal this ninth day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five John Greenfield
