The first written evidence for the village comes from 1265, and the first permanent houses from 1400. The Red Round Inn became a stopping place for travellers from London to Lewes by 1660, and as the roads became busier they were improved encouraging wealthier people to move to the area. These include John Baker Holroyd who moved into Sheffield Park in 1769 and later became the First Lord Sheffield.
Danehill was created from the parish of Fletching.
