WHITEHALL, February 8, 1861. The Queen has been pleased to grant unto Alfred Bidwell Welch, of Brunswick Square, in the Borough of Brighthelmstone, in the County of Sussex, Esquire, Son of Henry Welch, of Brunswick Square aforesaid, Esquire, by Adelaide, his Wife, Daughter of Thomas Thornton, late of Springfield, near Horsham, in the said County, and Sister of Thomas Thornton, late of Brunswick Square aforesaid, Esquires, both deceased, Her Royal licence and authority that he and his issue may, in compliance with a direction contained in the last will and testament of his maternal Uncle, the said Thomas Thornton, of Brunswick Square, Brighthelmstone aforesaid, Esquire, deceased, henceforth take and use the surname of Thornton in addition to and after that of Welch, and that lie and they may bear the arms of Thornton quarterly, with his and their own family arms; such arms being first duly exemplified according to the laws of arms and recorded in the Heralds 0ffice, otherwise the said Royal licence and permission to be void and of none effect: And to command that the said Royal concession and declaration he registered in Her Majesty's College of Arms.
