Burpham is built on the site of a Saxon fortified 'Burgh' which overlooks the River Arun.
The church, dedicated to St Mary, is built of local flint rubble and the lower courses of the roof are Horsham slab. It has Saxon origins, but its most well known feature is the Norman arch which leads into the south trancept.
The grave of the Rev. Edward Tickner Edwards is in the churchyard. He died aged 79 in 1945. He came to live in the village from London, bringing with him his wife and young family. He worked as a writer, when at the age of 50 he joined the army in 1915. He started as a private, serving throughout the Gallipoli campaign, and ended the war as a captain. He was ordained in 1920, working at Lyminster and Folkington. He was appointed Vicar of Burpham in 1927, a position held until his retirement in 1935 after which he continued to live in the area.
