Burwash, (East Sussex)

Parish picture

The recorded history of Burwash begins when the manor was given to the Count of Eu by William the Conqueror in recognition of his services in battle.

The parish church of St Bartholomew was built in 1090 but the tower is the only part surviving from this time (perhaps earlier judging by the shape of the belfry windows).

The war memorial, which stands at the top of School Hill adjacent to the church, contains a lamp at the top which is illuminated on the anniversaries of the deaths recorded upon it.

Parish picture

The church also contains a 14th Century cast iron slab on the wall near the Lady Chapel altar. Originally in the floor, it marked the resting place of the local iron making family of Collins, and it is believed to be the oldest example of a Sussex iron grave slab. The 14th century font is embelished with the famous Pelham Buckle and the churchyard has some Harmer terracotta gravestones from the early 19th century.

Parish picture

The modern Catholic Church of Christ the King is at the west end of the village.

The village is now associated with the late author, Rudyard Kipling who lived at Batemans, to the south of the village. The house was built in 1634 by John Brittan, an Iron Master. Kipling lived at Batemans from 1902 to 1936, when he died. His wife, Carrie, died in 1939, and left Batemans to the National Trust as a memorial to her husband. The three hundred year old house stands alongside the River Dudwell and with the watermill that still grinds corn and once generated electricity for the house; it is a pleasant and interesting place to visit.

Rampyndene is an imposing red brick house on the south side of the village High Street. It was built in 1699 for a local wealthy wool merchant and sports a lovely arched porch over the door. It is a remarkable house, built in the William and Mary style of architecture. It was once the residence of Colonel Feilden, a close friend of Rudyard Kipling.
