Chichester, St Paul, (West Sussex)

Parish picture

Originally built as a Chapel of Ease to the parish of St Peter the Great to cater for the great increase in the population of Chichester, the church of St Paul was consecrated October 1836.

Parish picture

The church was originally built with a tower, however by 1883 the south east buttress had failed and part of the south wall of the tower had collapsed. By 1948 the tower was declared unsafe and a faculty was granted to reduce the height and build a parapet and spire. In 1950, partial demolition revealed that there was nothing solid on which to build the proposed parapet and spire and a second faculty, dated 1951 authorised the demolition of the tower.
