Supposedly founded by William de Buckingham, who dedicated it to the Virgin Mary. Possessions confirmed b y Edward III. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the site was granted by King Henry VIII to William Clifford and Michael Wildbore in the 36th year of his reign.
