Apple dram (or Apuldram) is a parish bounded on the west by the eastern branch of Chichester harbour, the village being 1 ½ mile south-west from that city, in the south-western division of the county, hundred of Box & Stockbridge, petty sessional divison, rape and county court district of Chichester, union of Westhampnett, and in the rural deanery of Selsey and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. Dell Quay belongs to the Coporation of Chichester. The church of St Mary is an ancient edifice of stone, of the Early English period, and has a turret containing 2 bells; there is a flat coffin shaped slab of Sussex marble, bearing an ornamented cross in relief; the church was restored in 1877 and 1890, at the cost of £1,000 and affords 118 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1661, marriages from 1676 and burials from 1675. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £150, in the gift of the Dean & Chapter of Chichester, and held since 1896 by the Rev Richard Hicks Meredyth Baker. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The existing remains of the manor house, which dates from 15th century, consist of a quadrangular structure, about 27 feet by 20 feet, and some 45 feet high, called Ryman’s Tower. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, marl & gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley oats & roots. The soil is favourable for growth of wheat. The area is 933 acres of land, 4 of water, 29 of tidal water and 146 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,089; population in 1901 was 134.
