Yapton is a parish, 2 miles south-west from Ford Junction station on the Brighton & Portsmouth line of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway and 4 miles south-west of Arundel, in the south-western division of the county, Avisford hundred, Arundel rape, petty sessionaldivision and county court district, Westhampnett union, rural deanery of Arundel (first division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The Arundel & Portsmouth Canal pases through the parish, but is now disused. The church of St Mary is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower containing 4 bells; a fine organ was provided in 1901 and the chancel restored in 1902; there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1548. The living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Ford annexed, joint net income £258, with 20 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Henry Wynne M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here is a small Congregational chapel. Stephen Roe esq. of London, in 1766, besides endowing a Free School as below, directed that a certain share of his gift, now amounting to £14 16s 4d should be for distribution. F. Freeman-Thomas esq. M.P. of Batton, is lord of the manor. W.A. Hounsom esq. of 41 New Church Road, Brighton, is the principal landowner. The soil is rich mould; subsoil, light clay. The chief crops are wheat & oats. The area is 1,791 acres; rateable value £5,623; the population in 1901 was 738.
By the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” Ford’s Lane and North End, containing 6 houses and a population of 37, has been transferred from Walberton to this parish.
