Warbleton is a parish in the Weald of Sussex 280 feet above the sea level, commanding fine sea and inland views, 3 miles south-east from Heathfield and 3 miles north-east from Horeham Road station on the Tunbridge Wells & Eastbourne branch of the L, B & S C railway, 7 north from Hailsham and 17 north-east from Lewes, in the southern division of the county, Hawkesborough hundred, Hastings rape, Lewes county court district, Hailsham petty sessional division and union, rural deanery of Dallington, archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The Cuckmere stream flows through the parish. The church of St Mary is of stone, in the Early English style, with perpendicular insertions and additions, and has tower containing 6 bells, a new bell added in 1908 by the Haviland family, there is a monument to Sir John Lade bart. M.P. d. 1740; a brass to Dean William Prestwick, ob. 1436; and stained windows to the Darby family; in 1893 the church was reseated, and affords 320 sittings. A lynch gate is now (1909) being erected at the entrance to the churchyard by T. W. Green esq. The parish register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £437, with residence and 37 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Haivland family, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Charles Edward Oratt B.A. of Cambridge and London Universities. The charities amount to about £58 yearly. About 1 mile east of Rushlake Green are the remains of an ancient priory ( now forming part of the Priory farmhouse) founded by Sir John Pellham in the year 1413 for monks of the priory of the Holy Trinity, in Hastings. Stone House, the residence of Francis Dunn esq. is a mansion, partly in the Elizabethan style, situated in well-wooded grounds. Markyle is the seat of the Misses Darby. The Earls of Ashburnham & Chichester and the trustees of Smith’s charity are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Ashburnham, the Misses Darby, he trustees of the late J. R. Dunn esq. the trustees of Smith’s charity, George H. Day esq. and Sir James Duke bart. of Laughton Lodge, Shortgate. The soil is clay; subsoil, sand. Corn and hops are grown in small quantities. The chief industry is chicken rearing and fattening, which is carried on here to supply the seaside, London & provincial markets. The area is 6,200 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £6,190; the population of the civil parish including Bodle Street Green (which see), is 1,359, and of the ecclesiastical, 992
