Barlavington is locally known as Balton and Belton, is a parish 2 ½ miles south from Petworth station on the London, Brighton & South Coast railway and 7 miles south-east from Midhurst, in the north-western division of the county, Rotherbridge hundred, Arundel rape, Petworth petty sessional division, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Petworth and archdeaconry & diocese of Chichester. The church of St Mary is of stone in the Early English style, and has a turret containing 1 bell; it was restored in 1874, at a cost of £540, and affords 110 sittings, The register dates from the year 1656. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £76, with 9 acres of glebe, let for £10, in the gift of Douglas Bernard Hall esq. and held since 1902 by the Rev. Henry Louis Newman, who is also curate of Sutton & Bignor, and resides at Sutton. At Burton Hill in this parish is a sanatorium for patients belonging to the Society of Jesus. Burton Park, the residence of Douglas Bernard Hall esq. J.P., is an elegant mansion, partly of the Tudor period, situated in a richly wooded park and partly surrounded by a beautiful piece of water upwards of 50 acres in extent. Douglas Bernard Hall esq. who is lord of the manor, and Lord Leconfield are the principal landowners. The soil is light sand; subsoil, rock gravel. The chief crops are corn & roots. The area is 1,147 acres of land and 52 of water; rateable value £1,283; the population in 1901 was 130
