Kelly's Directory 1899, Selsey, West Sussex

Selsey (i.e. Seals’ Island) is a large seaside parish, once an island, but now part of the Manhood peninsula, and 8 ½ miles south from Chichester station on the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, in the South Western division of the county, Manhood hundred, Chichester rape, petty sessional division and county court district, Westhampnett union, rural deanery of Box grove (3rd division), and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. Selsey is a very healthy place, with fine sands on its south western coast, and affords a good view of the Isle of Wight: the village, situated about ¾ mile from the sea, and consisting of 3 streets, is very clean, and has a plentiful supply of good spring water, and a considerable crab, lobster and prawn fishery; there is a life boat station, and good anchorage for yachts all the year round. The hundred of Manhood and Selsey Tramways Company have 2 stations here, one for the village and the other for the beach: the line starts from Chichester, passing through Hunston for Donnington and Mundham, Chalder and Sidlesham for Sidlesham, and Ferry for Norton in Selsey; it is 8 miles in length and was opened Aug 27th, 1897 at a cost of £21,000. Selsey the original seat of the see of Chichester, was granted in 680 by Ethelwealh, King of Sussex, to St Wilfred, the exiled Bishop of Northumbria, and here he built a cathedral: Eadbert, his successor, was consecrated Bishop of Selsey in 711, and there were 22 Bishops of this see, but in 1072 Stigand removed the see to Chichester. The parish church of St Peter, erected in 1865, is in the Early English style, with Perpendicular additions, and has a bell-cot with spire containing 3 bells: the font is Norman: the church will seat 380 persons. The chancel of the old church at Norton is still standing, about 2 miles from the village, and is used as a chapel for burials and other occasional services. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net income £530, with residence, and 51 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chichester, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Ernest Malaher M.A. of All Souls‘ College, Oxford.. Here is a Bible Christian Chapel. The lecture hall, built in 1885, will hold 350 people. The trustees of the late Frederick William Grafton esq. Who are lords of the manor, and the Pagham Harbour Reclamation Company are the principal landowners. The area is 2,598 acres of land, 2 of water, 29 of tidal water and 1,416 of foreshore; rateable value £3,973; the population in 1891 was 1,039, including the coast guard station.

Norton is a hamlet in this parish, 2 miles north.
